All Silver and Deming Drills are 6″ overall length with 3-1/8″ flute length. ENLARGING AN EXISTING HOLE: Sometime ago I published a drilling tip on Facebook: “How To Enlarge A Hole Without Chatter”. I received a lot of feedback. Some said I didn’t know what I was talking about. Others knew about this tip and agreed it works very well. And many of you tried it for the first time and thanked me for the information. Once again, here is the tip: When you need to enlarge a hole, a larger drill bit will often vibrate and produce a chatter that results in a very poor hole rather than a nice, smooth, clean, round, accurate hole. To avoid this, simply use a piece of emery cloth. Fold it in half with the grit on the inside and the smooth part on the OUTSIDE to avoid scratching the work piece. Place it over the hole to be enlarged. Position the drill bit on the emery cloth over the hole and begin drilling. The drill will automatically center itself. The emery cloth will cause the drill bit to begin drilling smoothly, producing a beautiful, smooth-edged hole without a trace of chatter. It works every time.
